Recent Search Engine share as published by comScore puts Google at 43.7% followed by Yahoo at 28.8% and MSN at 12.8%. And in some countries like Japan, Google is still at # 10 position, the top position being enjoyed by Yahoo. Though most SEOs or website owners concentrate primarily on optimizing their sites for Google, we can not just afford to lose valuable traffic from Yahoo and MSN. By committing some time and efforts on Yahoo optimization, it is quite possible to gain a good amount of traffic.
One of the open secrets for getting high rankings in Yahoo is to get listed in Yahoo directory. But the cost of $299 to $600 per year may be too high for many of us; besides there is no guarantee that Yahoo will include your site in their directory even after you make the payment.
Well, all search engines have their own algorithms to determine the search results and ranking the websites. Like Google, Yahoo too judges content to be the most important factor in their algorithms. Yahoo also places a lot of importance on keyword density; though Google prefers a keyword density of around 2 %, Yahoo favors sites with keyword density of 7 to 8%. Yahoo also gives importance to the description tags which most Google centered SEOs tend to neglect.
I recommend a good article which I came across on SEO for Yahoo which discusses many such SEO techniques for optimizing your site for Yahoo.

1Interesting tips, I find the 2% vs. 7% KWD claim particularly noteworthy — but where’s the evidence? There are nearly as many conjectures about SE algorithms as there are SEOs, but an experienced SEO knows to ignore most of the chatter unless there’s some sort of evidence. I’d like to know how the original author came up with those percentages.
Another “open secret” that bears mentioning about Yahoo placement is that the participation in their paid inclusion program helps “organic” rankings. It’s amazing how much Yahoo SERPs are influenced by non-algo determined factors, compared to Google.

2Melanie, well, I have seen that URLs, Titles, and Content with high keyword density generally rank higher in Yahoo than in Google. The best way to verify this empirical formula for keyword density would be to experiment with a brand new website with not so popular keywords.
And, yes participation in the overture paid services boost Yahoo organic rankings too. As Yahoo is #1 search engine in Japan where I live, overture paid services make a very good business.

4Hi Allen, To see how many pages Google has indexed from your site, go to Google and type the following command
site:www.allenx.net ***
You can see that Google has indexed 59 pages from your site. And none of them are in the supplemental. So be happy !
Don’t put so many outgoing links in your posts. They will do harm to your own page rank.

6Hi I am looking for help in improving my rankings for the keyword ラフティング (rafting in Japanese)
Any tips?
For Japan Yahoo is the major search engine with Google a distant second but slowly making ground as the years go by.

7Hi Mark,
Konnichi wa. To rank well in Japanese search engines, you should have selected a domain name with .jp extension instead of .com and/or hosted the domain with a Japanese hosting company.
To rank in Yahoo Japan, the best bet is to go for Yahoo directory inclusion with all Japanese keywords in your description. It is worth the $300 investment per year.
Apart from that you need to do the usual SEO in Japanese language. SEO charges in Japan are very high and many of them offer poor services. If you let me know your monthly budget, I can let you know what SEO services we could offer for your Japanese site.
