When many Americans are wondering if they could buy a new PC for aound US$100, the Indian government has come up with a new promise of making available a low cost computers at just US$ 10 within the next six months. The main goal of this mission is to take knowledge to every household and help students get information on every subject while sitting at home. Such a computer could be afforderd by most middle-class families in India.
This low cost PC is designed as a small equipment with LAN, expandable memory, and Wi-Fi facilities. The Indian government also plans to produce e-knowledge database for every subject; students can access this information at no cost.

Technology for these small computers has been developed by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in India. India’s National Mission on Education (IME) and Information Communication Technology (ICT) are sponsoring this project for low-cost computers under the central scheme.
With such developments will India be another Taiwan or Korea, when it comes to Computer Hardware technology? Or, the project would get opposed and delayed like the Nano Car initiative by Tata? Or, would it be a successful one like the Chandrayan – unmanned mission to the moon? Only time will provide the answer.

1PC at $10! That would be great. But soon it will create lot of e-waste, as I am sure the maintenance costs may be much higher than its price.
