I first noticed this post at Internet Marketing Fool last month. That time the worth of my blog was predicted zero. But today the same tool predicts the value of my blog to be $23,710.68 !!

My blog is worth $23,710.68.

So did my virtual real estate appreciate by $23,710.68 in just one month? Well, I’d be willing to cash it even at at 50% of the predicted value :)  We can easily see that this value is exaggerated, so let’s just look at that blog worth calculator tool as some hopeful amusement.

The logic used by the tool for computing the value of the blog was inspired by Tristan Louis’s research which valued each Technorati link to the blog network of Weblogs Inc. (which was sold for about 25 million dollars). Since the research took into account only Technorati links, and my blog was not indexed in Technorati one month ago, it was no wonder that it was valued at $0. Many other metrics such as Pagestrength from SEOMoz also give lot of importance to Technorati links, so we can not ignore Technorati rankings anymore.

If you look at weblogs blogs (e.g. adjab.com)  they indeed have high rankings with thousand of inbound links in Technorati. But you can see that most of these links are self generated. Every Weblogs blog has links to hundreds of other blogs in the weblogs network in their blogroll in the sidebar. The problem is that Technorati does not index blog entries, but rather webpages. Technorati will often repeatedly give you inbound links every time the blogger in your blogroll writes a new entry. Now do you get the point how you could amass hundreds of inbound links in Technorati in just few days?

So you might have your favorite circle of blog friends crosslinking each other posts, but though it might get you hundreds of backlinks, but it will not improve technorati rank much. All you need is just a link (not nofollow) to your blog in the sidebar of your networked blogs. That is the magic bullet for improving the perceived value of your blog.Of course, since Technorati counts inbound links only for the previous 6 months, you and your blogroll partners need to have active blogs to rank higher. If you stop posting and people stop backlinking your blog, your technorati rank will start dropping and after 6 months, irrespective of how popular your blog is now.
