Well, we have these arguments spread over the internet everywhere about Alexa. My personal view is that we miss some very important factors while questioning Alexa.

1) Sampling for quality analysis is a tried and trusted way as it is not really possible to test everything.

2) In Alexa's case sampling by taking the data of users who have Alexa bar installed. Well, the safe assumption is that if one site's hits are not going into database because some of it's users are not using Alexa tool bar, logically and with sampling theory we can assume more or less the similar percentage of users for another site(s) also.

3) An important point to be noted is that Alexa mentions that data about sites over 100,000 rank should not be taken as accurate. Well, by this Alexa is taking care of people manipulating the rankings. You can manipulate by some 100s of numbers but not by many 1000's of numbers.

Alexa can not be accurate but it's dependable.

Best regards

Interesting article.

However I have got a question. Why do you think that if you have higher Alexa rank people will trust your business more? You sad it is easy to influence the Alexa Rank and it is very inaccurate. So why would people care about it? It is just some kind of good Alexa "marketing" which persuade people to trust it? Or most of people simply don't think about its inaccuracy?

[...] Alexa is owned by Amazon. A website that records and tracks the websites history with a ranking system. The rankings bases on how many hits your site gets. There is a downfall to this tracking system. Alexa only records data from people who have install the toolbar. A extension that most users are too lazy to install. This means that it’s totally in accurate. If I used the toolbar and was going to my site 10 times a day , my Alexa ranking would improve highly. Great good , what impact does this have to my site then ? Well , if you’ve got a high Alexa ranking , it’s easier to sell your site. It’s also better for when you’re selling text links on your site. But unless you’re a serious webmaster , I would not worry about Alexa. [...]
