that's one of the advantages of a big company, they pay a lot to build quality websites that have tons of content and are optimized properly, which the search engines love, and most of them have been around for a long time. just build your site up in a relevant manner and contribute to your industry. people want to read interesting sites and this theory will keep people coming back and combine that with word of mouth and you'll have a ranking site before you know it.

very true..big companies with major keywords and known brands must rank not only because they are big companies but because they have very useful and relevant content.

@Sean: To ensure you are seen by Google as an authorative site within your niche you need to try and capture some high value links: .org .edu etc... also Relevant Links... and look for hubs that form for each of your search phrases...

I know that this mini-update has ticked a lot of people off, but in my opinion it is better for searchers; who are after all, Google's main target audience, SEO's need to be able to adapt to survive.

I agree.

I run a non-commercial blog dedicated to a pro-sports team. Prior to this change I was getting 30-40 hits per day.

Now I get 1 or two.

I check even minor keywords that used to bring traffic to my site, and now all that pops up is the major commercial sites (ESPN, CBS, SI etc....)
