Recently there was a rumor on the Internet that there has been a change in Google algorithm which seems to be helping big brands for ranking on major keywords. Matt Cutts, the Head of Search Quality group in Google, confirmed in the following video that the rumor was indeed true, and Google ranking algorithm update named ‘Vince‘ is responsible for the sudden boost in rankings for big companies for major keywords.
As Matt Cutts explains in the video, this is not a major Google update, but just one of the over 300 changes which Google carries out a year to enhance the quality of their search results. He further explains that this change does not favor any specific brands, but rather gives a boost in rankings based on relevant criteria such as trust, authority, PageRank or reputation.
Here, you can read the complete transcript of Vince Update.

1In the past, I had the impression that Google was impartial and gave special consideration to non-commercial sites. Google’s new logic that being a big brand means trustworth and authority is utterly baseless. Big brands spend huge amount of money to promote and defend their sites and have selfish economic interest. This algorithm update by Google is really not welcome.

2I agree.
I run a non-commercial blog dedicated to a pro-sports team. Prior to this change I was getting 30-40 hits per day.
Now I get 1 or two.
I check even minor keywords that used to bring traffic to my site, and now all that pops up is the major commercial sites (ESPN, CBS, SI etc….)

4@Sean: To ensure you are seen by Google as an authorative site within your niche you need to try and capture some high value links: .org .edu etc… also Relevant Links… and look for hubs that form for each of your search phrases…
I know that this mini-update has ticked a lot of people off, but in my opinion it is better for searchers; who are after all, Google’s main target audience, SEO’s need to be able to adapt to survive.

5very true..big companies with major keywords and known brands must rank not only because they are big companies but because they have very useful and relevant content.

6@ Credit Claims: I agree, quality contents and links are the 2 most powerful factors in ranking.

7that’s one of the advantages of a big company, they pay a lot to build quality websites that have tons of content and are optimized properly, which the search engines love, and most of them have been around for a long time. just build your site up in a relevant manner and contribute to your industry. people want to read interesting sites and this theory will keep people coming back and combine that with word of mouth and you’ll have a ranking site before you know it.
